A mobile website is one that improves and optimizes the user experience for the ever-growing population of website visitors who access your website on their smart phones and tablet devices.
According to a report released by comScore on October 10, 2011, smartphones and tablets are accounting for nearly 7 percent of U.S. internet traffic. Approximately two thirds of that traffic is coming from smartphones, with much smaller screens that cannot reasonably accommodate the size of the typical web page. These numbers are growing larger by the day and they are not something to ignore. More and more people are buying smartphones and tablets, and more and more people are accessing the internet from these devices.
Websites built for the desktop are not optimized for the mobile experience. Often, the text on a desktop website is simply too small to read on a mobile device. Or maybe the desktop website utilizes drop-down menus or Flash, neither of which works on 100% of mobile devices.
Desktop websites are built with broadband in mind, meaning that in most cases it doesn’t matter if large images and files are used on a desktop website – because a cable or fiber connection will load these files quickly anyway. Over 3G, however, these files are going to take a lot longer to load. A well designed mobile website will minimize large files and images for faster loading times.
Finally, it's important to consider the average mobile user. They are on the go and they are looking for information in a hurry. A desktop website might make them climb through mountains of information before they find what they need. Your mobile website should be lean on information and only include the most important things that your website visitors want to know.
